Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters, age 22 from South Africa has been crowned Miss Universe 2017. The event which was held in Las Vegas on Sunday, Nov 26th saw 10 beautiful women compete for the prestigious crown. The event was hosted by Steve Harvey.
Self-defense trainer who recently earned a business management degree from North-West University was crowned Miss Universe while Miss Colombia and Miss Jamaica were the runner ups.
Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters passion for self-defense was reinforced when she was hijacked and held at gunpoint about a month after winning her title as Miss South Africa after which she helped build helped develop a program to train women in self-defence in various situations.
92 women from around the world participated in the decades-old competition. This year’s edition had the most contestants ever, including the first representatives in its history of Cambodia, Laos and Nepal.
