Fill in President, Emmerson Mnangagwa has emerged as the winner of Zimbabwe’s presidential election 2018 according to the electoral commission. This will be Zimbabwe’s first election for almost four decades.

With all 10 provinces declared, Mnangagwa won 50.8% of votes, compared to 44.3% for opposition leader Nelson Chamisa.

According to BBC, by narrowly winning more than 50% of the vote, Mr Mnangagwa avoids a run-off election against Mr Chamisa.

Taking to Twitter, the president wrote: “Thank you Zimbabwe! I am humbled to be elected President of the Second Republic of Zimbabwe.

“Though we may have been divided at the polls, we are united in our dreams. This is a new beginning. Let us join hands, in peace, unity & love, & together build a new Zimbabwe for all!”

Mr Mnangagwa took over as president November 2017, from long-serving leader Robert Mugabe.
