Nollywood actress, Genevieve Nnaji’s directorial debut, Lionheart has been disqualified from 2020 Academy awards. The sad news comes a few weeks after Nollywood movie lover rejoiced and commended the beautiful actress and her team for becoming the first Nigerian submission to be considered for the Best International Feature Film Oscar. A body classified as the oldest and highest Hollywood award ever known. The ward started in 1929 and will be having its 92nd ceremony in the year 2020. The awarding body did not accept the movie stating that the film does not have a sufficient proportion of foreign language in its dialogue.
Its a clear fact that this will serve as an opening eye to other Nigerian and African filmmakers who would want to submit their film to the likes of Oscars and other heavyweight award bodies out there in the nearest future.
When The Wrap.com broke the news that Genevieve Nnaji’s movie got disqualified on the 5th of October, this came as a surprise to both Nigerians and celebrities alike. Lionheart is, by most accounts, a charming, well-made film about a woman battling the corporate patriarchy upon taking over a company from her ailing father. Genevieve Nnaji, who is 40 years of age, has come a long way featuring in over 100 Nollywood movies. Her directorial debut was also the first Nigerian Netflix original movie and the first Nigerian submission for Oscars. Despite many Nigerians arguing that the film is not all that with a pretty basic story, many also loved the selection of great actors, which includes Nkem Owo, Pete Edochie and many other, the cinematography and beautiful message the movie carries.
LionHeart since its premiere has taken Genevive Nnaji to higher heights. After her Oscar Nominations, she got a congratulatory message from many Nigerians and movie lovers. The one that stood well out was a congratulatory message from SCANDAL Star, Kerry Washington who request for a launch date.
