Striker Victor Osimhen has moved to No. 21 on the Super Eagles top scorers’ list following his strike against the Central African Republic in Douala last Sunday, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
The 22-year-old’s strike against Les Fauves took his tally to eight goals in 14 games since he made his official debut for the Eagles in their 2-0 loss at home to South Africa at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium on October 6, 2017, when he came on for Moses Simon in the 85th minute of the defeat.
He has now surpassed the quartet of Kelechi Iheanacho, Joseph Yobo, Victor Ikpeba and Humphrey Edobor, who all scored seven goals and equals Benedict Akwuegbu, who bagged eight goals in 30 games for the three-time African champions.
The Napoli striker also featured against Uganda in an international friendly and Tunisia in the third-place match at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations before scoring his first goal for the team in his fourth appearance in a friendly against Ukraine, which ended 2-2.
Osimhen broke his duck from the spot in the 34th minute after Samuel Kalu was fouled in the box. He was substituted in the 90th minute for Josh Maja.
His second goal was also from the spot in a 2021 AFCON qualifier against the Benin Republic in Uyo, where the Eagles came from a goal down to beat the Squirrels 2-1.
The former Wolfsburg forward bagged his first brace for the team in Nigeria’s 4-2 win over Lesotho at the Setsoto Stadium. He scored in the 74th and 84th minute of the encounter.
His fifth goal for the Eagles was against Sierra Leone at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin-City – where the Eagles let slip a 4-0 lead to draw 4-4.
He was also on target against Lesotho in the reverse fixture in Lagos and against Cape Verde and the Central African Republic.
The Nigerian will now be aiming to equal or surpass the nine goals scored by trio Emmanuel Amunuke, Emmanuel Emenike and Stephen Keshi.
