Is EFCC wrong for breaking into Rochas Okorocha’s apartment through the roof, in order to arrest him?

“Come and help me, my Lord and my God!”

That was the cry of the former Imo State governor, as he prostrated while praying to God to save him from The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) operatives, who were breaking into his home through the ceiling.

This was seen in a live recording making its rounds on social media on 24th May 2022. The Anti-graft agency has accused him of skipping bail and neglecting to honour invitations at various times, according to the reports.

Normally, I think it’s a criminal act for the agency to forcefully enter his home in such a manner. That is the style of thieves who have been denied entrance into a property. The video showed them destroying his ceiling, and the clip was a total eyesore as observed by many Nigerians on Social Media. I do not think this is appropriate in saner climes unless you’re trying to break into a property in order to save kidnapped victims from their captors.

But if other reports have it that he was being “arrested for jumping administrative bail and resisting being served court papers after he was charged on Jan 22, 2022, for diversion of N2.9bn public funds,” then the anti-graft agency could make a case of defence, if he takes them to court – he was insulted and had part of his property destroyed, because of negligence to the rule of law.

If we recall the controversial occurrence in 2018, where it was said that the commission invited former Ekiti State Governor, on grounds of stolen funds; he (Ayo Fayose) arrived at the EFCC’s office on a Tuesday, at the expiration of his tenure as governor of the state with a bag pack, a pair of jeans and a face cap.

He wore a branded T-Shirt with the inscription “EFCC I’m here.” The former governor arrived in the company of his supporters and members of his party, such as the Former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode, Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, as well as his legal team led by Mr. Mike Ozhekome.

It was also noticed that Governor Wike said he accompanied him to ensure that he was not harassed.

Why didn’t Rochas learn from Fayose?

On this ground, you can accept the views of certain people who are of the opinion that there is a need to consider his misfortune to be what he deserves. A Facebook user by the name of Clara Ihuoma had this to say:

“For me this is karma! The same drama king that used maximum force on INEC staffs during election. Lay siege on them, held them hostage until they wrote results for him! We hail thee dear drama king!”

So, what if the Law of Karma was playing a part in Rochas’ life?  Inasmuch as there are people who do not believe in the existence of this Law, we have seen people being subjected to its realities.

Like a facebook user said, people who have held seats such as the one Rochas alighted from, should be able to account for their deeds.

If that was the only way to make him answer their call, then they’re not entirely wrong for using the only available means to question him. And from the look of things, it was possible that he had no intention of giving them an audience if they hadn’t forced themselves on him.
