Benedict Obioma Godwin Chijioke a 47-year-old UK Based Nigerian hip hop legend and British MC has lost his life to Coronavirus after contracting the virus. He has hospitalised around in early after contracting the virus.
He later went into a medically-induced coma following “complications” surrounding the virus. After coming out of the coma later April, his friends and family were relieved thinking he is out of the woodblocks, unfortunately, he didn’t pull through.
The rapper’s death was confirmed by his team on Thursday, May 7th.
Ty was born in London to Nigerian Igbo parents. However, he spent many years of his youth growing up with private foster parents in Jaywick, Essex as reported in a 2019 Channel 4 News feature.
Fundraising to fund his medical bill was closed on 19 April when he appeared to be recovering after leaving the ICU. His death was later confirmed by his team on Thursday, May 7th.
Known for his brand Tymusical, Ty rose to prominence in 2001 with his The Awkward and his second album Upwards got nominated for The Mercury Prize in 2004. Ty went on to release three more albums with his last being A Work Of Heart in 2018. In 2019, the rapper formed a supergroup called Kingdom featuring rappers Blak Twang and Rodney P. Ty also collaborated with artists including Soweto Kinch, De La Soul and Roots Manuva.

Since Ty’s death was announced on May 7th, the British black community have taken to social media to pay their tribute.
