THE LOWER CUT SYNOPSIS:

Back home in Gambia, Bintu goes through the excruciating ordeal of female circumcision otherwise known as Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).  Following the procedure, her whole life is blighted by trauma, flashbacks, pain, sorrow tears and blood.

In a bid to escape these horrific feelings, she emigrates to Europe where she discovers that she is not alone as a victim; her closest friend and confidant has also been through the procedure.

The effect of FGM on their love-lives is harrowing, to say the least. Together, they try to beat the negative effects of FGM.

Bintu and Adamma soon learn to face up to the reality that FGM is not only practiced in Africa but also in parts of Asia, the Middle-East –virtually the whole world. They are curious as to why different cultures perform FGM. They are confronted with the stark reality and criminality that envelop the global phenomenon of FGM.

The Lower Cut is a bird’s eye view of anti FGM legislations and Child Protection laws in the UK and other parts of the world.

Poignant as these issues may be, award winning Director, George Kelly has craftily  presented the subject matter without losing the humorous flavour associated with his style of production.

THE LOWER CUT is presented as a fusion between Nollywood and Bollywood, by highlighting cultural similarities between Nigeria and India as reference points.
