Veteran Nollywood actress Ini Edo has lost the ownership rights of the famous movie ‘Shanty Town’ to filmmaker Chinenye Nworah.
The iconic actress was struck force off her grand after losing the Netflix hit series to filmmaker Chinenye Nworah.
Before the heat, in January 2024, Ini Edo and Minini Empire Productions Limited, MEP, filed a double intellectual property petition against Chinenye Nworah alongside her production company, ‘Giant Creative Media Limited’, GCM, over trademark rights of the famous Netflix series, Shanty Town.
In the petition, the Nigerian actress sought to own the trademark and copyright linked with the hit Netflix series ‘Shanty Town.’
However, unfortunately, victory slid in the grand of Nwaora and her company GCM after the Nigerian Copyright Commission, NCC, and the Nigerian Trademark Registry ruled out the Ini Edo’s call, labeling the petition with a dearth of substance.
Other rulings identified that the NCC denied a petition by Ini Edo and MEP for the cancellation of two copyright certificates issued to Nworah for the literary work “Shanty Town” (Certificate Number LW10177) and the audiovisual work “Shanty Town” (Certificate Number CF1448).
Reacting to the victory, Nwora’s lawyer, Olisa Agbakoba, detailed the importance of defending creative works and ensuring fair compensation for artists.
His Words, “The successful defence of these claims highlights the importance of protecting creative works and ensuring fair compensation for artists.”
Nigerians stormed all the social media platforms and reacted heavily according to their views.
