What started as an event to celebrate stars in the global filmmaking industry at the 94th Academy Awards on Sunday, March 27 2022, soon became a cringy one to remember after famous American comedian Chris Rock made a joke about 50-year-old Jada Pinkett Smith. Just before presenting the award for Best Documentary, The veteran comedian compared Jada to GI Jane over her bald head.
He said, “Jada, I love ya. GI Jane 2, can’t wait to see it.” Initially, Will Smith, who was sitting beside his wife and Lupita N’yongo, had busted into laughter alongside others while Jada rolled her eyes, not finding the joke funny. After what many felt was a realization that he was talking about his wife’s bald head, the 53-year-old Hollywood actor got up from his seat, casually walked to the stage, and gave the comedian a hot slap. The comedian tried to explain himself but physically angered Will Smith wouldn’t have it and shouted, “Keep my wife’s name out of your F* Mouth.” Twice.
Ouch! Looking back to when Jada opened up in 2018 about losing her hair and later going on lowcut over an autoimmune disease, Alopecia, viewers quickly assumed it’s the reason the Fresh Prince of Bel Ail defended his wife. But when Will Smith took to the stage later that night after winning an Oscar for his performance in King Richard then burst into tears while talking about protecting his family, it soon became clear that the issue was deeper than the joke and might have something to do with her entanglements, including her past rumoured affair with Chris Rock.
