For the first time in the Academy’s history, movies that skipped theatrical release will still be eligible for Oscar selection as part of the introduction of several new rules and changes.
The Academy has announced that it will temporarily consider for Oscar eligibility movies released on commercial streaming platforms like YouTube due to the coronavirus pandemic.
This was made known by the Academy Awards Committee which met on Tuesday to approve the unprecedented changes.
However, the rule change is not expected to last beyond the 93rd Academy Awards, which are still scheduled for Feb. 28, 2021. It also comes with the strict stipulation that only films previously planned for theatrical release will be eligible for Oscar consideration.
Academy president David Rubin and chief executive Dawn Hudson said in a joint statement that: “the historically tragic Covid-19 pandemic necessitates this temporary exception to our awards eligibility rules. The academy firmly believes there is no greater way to experience the magic of movies than to see them in a theater. Our commitment to that is unchanged and unwavering.
For the other notable changes, all academy members — and not just a select committee — could vote in the international Feature Film category.
