5 time tennis champion, Venus Williams beat Briton Johanna Konta to reach Saturday’s Wimbledon women singles final. The 37-year-old American 10th seed played superbly to win 6-4 6-2 on Centre Court and set up a final against Spain’s Garbine Muguruza. If Venus wins, she will be the oldest woman to win Wimbledon since 1908.
Konta, the new darling of Centre Court, was out of her depth against the American who was poker faced throughout, only raising a smile having won the match.
Ranked world no.11 11 in singles as of January 28, 2017, Williams has been ranked world no. 1 by the Women’s Tennis Association on three occasions, for a total of 11 weeks.
She first became the world no. 1 on February 25, 2002, the first African American woman to do so in the Open Era. On June 10, 2002, Venus and her sister Serena became the first sisters to hold the no. 1 and no. 2 spots in the singles rankings, respectively.
