The Nigerian Nollywood industry, while growing, produced and released several movies in 2022. A few of them sparked massive reactions on social media. Some for how well they were made, and others for how bad. Some made it to the popular online streaming platform Netflix while others ended up on the big screen at local cinemas.

We at African Glitz have done our research and selected 10 Nollywood 2022 movie releases that got many reactions from movie lovers this year.

1. The man of God

The man of God is a 2022 Nigerian movie produced and directed by Bolanle Austin-Peters. The movie was released on Netflix on the 16th of April 2022 as Bolanle Austen-Peter’s first Netflix-branded film.

The movie is about a young man who forsakes his harsh religious upbringing to live his own life — but his soul remains caught between the world and the faith he left behind.

The movie cast includes; Akah Nani, Osas Ighodaro, Jude Chukwuka, Ayo Mogaji, Olumide Oworu, Patrick Doyle, Mawuli Gavor, Dorcas Shola-Fapson, Atlanta Bridget Johnson and Prince Nelson Enwerem.

However, this movie got many reactions from viewers as they had something to say about the cinematography and storyline.

2. Anikulapo

Aníkúlápó is a 2022 Nigerian epic fantasy film produced by Kunle Afolayan. It was distributed by Netflix and released on 30 September 2022.

The film was shot in Oyo State, Nigeria. Kunle Afolayan described the work as a “Game of Thrones’ recreated in Nigeria but with a better representation of the Yoruba culture.

AnikulapoThe storyline is about a man who had an affair with the king’s wife. After an affair with the king’s wife leads to his demise, there was a twist. the zealous traveller encounters a mystical bird with the power to give him another chance in life. Will he use it well?

The epic movie actors include; Kunle Remi, Bimbo Ademoye, Sola Sobowale, Hakeem Kae-Kazim, Taiwo Hassan, Fathia Balogun, Kareem Adepoju and others.

3. Chief Daddy part 2 (Going for broke)

Chief Daddy 2: Going for Broke, is a 2022 Nigeria Comedy movie that was released on Netflix on 1st January as a continuation of Chief Daddy 1.

The Beecroft family are ready to spend all of Chief Daddy’s inheritance, but not if the CEO of his company has anything to do with it.

The movie was written by Bode Asiyanbi, Hiedi Uys, Salah Sabiti, Mo Abudu, produced by EbonyLife and directed by an award-winning director, Niyi Akinmolayan.

The film was packed with top Nollywood stars, including; Shaffy Bello, Funke Akindele-Bello, Joke Silva, Rahama Sadau, Mawuli Gavor, Beverly Naya, Falz to name a few.

However, many viewers reacted badly to Chief Daddy 2: Going for Broke. Many movie lovers who loved part one claimed that part two was unnecessary and the storyline did not make much sense. But a lot of others pointed out that the visual was excellent.

5. Blood sisters

Blood Sisters is the first 2022 Nigerian Netflix Original series. It was directed by Biyi Bandele and Kenneth Gyang.

The four-part series was released on May 5 2022. The release was a collaboration of Netflix and Mo Abudu through her media company, Ebonylife TV.

The storyline is about two friends, Sarah and Kemi, who are bound by a dangerous secret, and are forced to go on the run after a wealthy groom disappears during his engagement party.

The movie features Nollywood stars such as; Ini Dima-Okojie and Nancy Isime in the lead, with Ramsey Noah, Kate Henshaw, Wale Ojo, Kehinde Bankole, Deyemi Okanlawon, Gabriel Afolayan, Tope Tedela, among others.

5. Selina

Selina is Nollywood romantic comedy movie produced by Uduak Oguamanam and directed by Bunmi Akingbola.

The storyline is about a lady named Selina, who is a skilled local cook with big ambitions in life. How will she navigate both?

The movie was released on 17 May, 2022 with subsequent parts of the movie released in the following months.

Selina features movie stars, such as; Bimbo Ademoye, Etim Effiong and a few others.

6. Brotherhood

Brotherhood is a Nigerian crime-action thriller written and produced by Jade Osiberu and directed by Loukman Ali.

The film was released to cinemas on 23rd September 2022.

The storyline is about two brothers who became orphaned when their parents were killed on new year’s Day on their way home from crossover church service.
After years of fighting to survive on the streets of Lagos, the brothers fall on opposite sides of the law.

Brotherhood features Nollywood actors such as; Tobi Bakre, Falz, Basketmouth, Sam Dede, Ronke Oshodi Oke, Toni Tones, Zubby Micheal, Mr Macaroni and a host of others.

Brotherhood started showing in several African countries, including Nigeria, Cameroon, Benin Republic, Burkina Faso, Togo, Niger Republic, Senegal, Congo, Rwanda, Gabon, Guinea, and Madagascar.

7. King of thieves (Agesinkole)

King of Thieves (Ògúndábède) is a 2022 Nigerian thriller film produced by Femi Adebayo and directed by Tope Adebayo and Adebayo Tijani.

The movie hit the cinema nationwide on April 8, 2022.

King of Thieves is an epic tale of Agesinkole, an all-powerful bandit, and his reign of terror in the prosperous Kingdom of Ajeromi. Concerned by his pillaging, the kingdom moves to destroy him through the hunters, witches and priests, thus beginning this adventurous saga of revenge, bravery, and glory.

The movie star actors such as; Odunlade Adekola, Femi Adebayo, Toyin Abraham, Broda Shaggi, Adebayo Salami, Lateef Adedimeji, and Ibrahim Chatta.

8. Blood Covenant

Blood Covenant is Nigerian Nollywood movie produced by Chinaza Onuzo, Zulumoke Oyibo and directed by Fiyin Gambo. The movie was released on 15 April, 2022.

The Blood Covenant is the story of four friends who swore a blood covenant when they were in secondary school, never to leave each other.

The Nollywood movie features actors such as; Alexx Ekubo, Tobi Bakre, Shawn Faqua, Uzor Arukwe, Omowunmi Dada and several others.

9. Elesin Oba

Elesin Oba, The King’s Horseman is a 2022 Yoruba historical drama film directed by late Biyi Bandele and distributed by Netflix.

The movie is based on Wole Soyinka’s book, the King’s Horseman, a stage play he wrote while in Cambridge. The movie, Elesin Oba was released in Nigeria on 28th October, 2022 and available on Netflix on 4th November, 2022. It became flew to the top and became number one on Netflix within 24hrs of release.

The movie stars Odunlade Adekola, Shaffy Bello, Brymo, Deyemi Okanlawon, Omowunmi Dada, Jide Kosoko, Langley Kirkwood, Joke Silva, amongst others in supporting roles.

So many viewers reacted and had alot to say about this newly released movie.

10. The set-up (part 2)

The Set Up 2 is a 2022 Nigerian crime thriller film. It was released in Nigeria on 12 August 2022, and is a part 2 to The Set Up released in 2019.

The Nollywood movie was jointly produced by Inkblot Productions, Film One Entertainment and Anakle Studios, directed by Naz Onuzo instead of Niyi Akinmolayan, who directed the first part.

The film stars Adesua Etomi, Kehinde Bankole, Nancy Isime, Jim Iyke, Tina Mba, Uzor Arukwe, Kate Henshaw, Blossom Chukwujekwu, Stan Nze, Lota Chukwu and a host of others.
