The 3 months jail sentence handed down to former Labour MP Fiona Onasanya is to be reviewed after it was deemed too lenient.
Onasanya was jailed for three months on Tuesday after she was found guilty of perverting the course of justice in relation to a speeding ticket.
Her car was caught driving 41mph in a 30mph zone in July, 2017.
The now-independent MP who has repeatedly denied the charges and that she was behind the wheel of the speeding vehicle has said she intends to appeal against her conviction.
A spokesman for the attorney general’s office said: “We have received a request for the case of Fiona Onasanya to be considered under the unduly lenient sentence scheme.”
“The law officers have 28 days from sentencing to consider the case.”
Onasanya’s brother Festus was sentenced to 10 months after he plead guilty to the same charge of perverting the course of justice.
Despite having been expelled from the Labour Party in December and calls for her to resign from across the political divide, Onasanya has refused to step down from her position.
Yesterday, former Commons watchdog Sir Alistair Graham said that the convicted MP should lose her £77,000 salary.
As she has not been sentenced to at least a year, Onasanya has not been automatically disqualified from her role as an MP.
Amid the calls for her sentence to be increased, some have disputed the need for one in the first place.
Conservative MEP Daniel Hannan tweeted: “Fiona Onasanya should resign as an MP. But is it really sensible to send her to prison when she is no harm to anyone, and when convicted burglars so rarely get custodial sentences?”
