Girl Rising, a global campaign to raise awareness on girl’s education and empowerment through documentaries announced British-Nigerian actor, David Oyelowo as its new ambassador on March 8, 2018, in Los Angeles, California.
Established in 2013, the organization is celebrating its fifth year in operation, telling the stories of girls from deprived communities in different countries around the world, who are doing extraordinary things. The stories of these girls are told through films directed by Academy Award-nominated director, Richard Robbins.
David Oyelowo, age 41, started the David Oyelowo Leadership Scholarship to help empower girls in Nigeria. He has also been working with GEANCO Foundation in Nigeria to support victims of terror attacks, transform the lives of the poor and vulnerable in Africa.
David was made the ambassador together with Andra Day in honour of International Women’s Day. The special event was attended by the Chief Executive Officer of Girl Rising, Christina Lowery,Oyelowo’s father – Stephen Oyelowo, his wife – Jessica Oyelowo and their children; Caleb Oyelowo, Penuel Oyelowo.
