Oranisers of the inaugural Executive Mama Put (EMP) and Udenson Calbeck Associates (UCA) pop-up restaurant have revealed that author Ayo Akinfe will be attending their grand launching on Saturday, May 13 where he will sign copies of his new book Black Ladder.
Due to hold at Maida Hill Place on Fernhead Road in west London this weekend, the EMP & UCA pop-up restaurant idea is an innovative concept designed to bring African cuisine to Nigerians across London. To hold every month, it will be organised at different restaurants around the city and its environs, treating guests to a unique array of Nigerian food.
Osita Udenson, EMP & UCA’s co-founder, said: “Our inaugural event will be taking place on Saturday, May 13, starting at 7pm, with dinner served at 8pm. On offer will be a wide array of food that includes fisherman’s soup, bazaar jollof rice, stewed beef, sticky chicken and gizza dodo, while a selection of salads including EMP’s famous watermelon salad will also be on offer.
“After dinner, guests will be treated to entertained with music and DJ Cole Train will be on hand to make sure they get full value for their £35 fee. Soft drinks, alcohol and suya will also be available for sale on the day, so it will be a memorable night to remember.”

Nky Iweka, EMP & UCA’s other co-founder, added: “Hopefully, after this initial event, our whirligig will become a permanent feature of the Nigerian community in the UK. We are delighted to have Ayo Akinfe on board to sign copies of his book as the availability of the recently-launched publication will add to the occasion.”
Launched on May 2, Black Ladder is contemporary fiction novel which depicts the life of a typical Nigerian migrant in the UK. Selling for just 12, the 428 page book is seen as relevant to the lives of Nigerians in Britain as it highlights experiences they can relate to.
Ayo Akinfe said: “Suji Mustapha, the central character in the book, grew up against humble beginnings in Nigeria and through sheer hard work, managed to get a university degree in insurance. He ended up coming to the UK where he found out that his education counted for little and he had to start work at McDonalds amid a hostile and prejudiced atmosphere.
“Despite all the odds stacked against him, however, Suji laboured on, studied, worked hard and became the first African-born director of a merchant bank in the City of London. Battling against formidable obstacles all the way, Suji remained focused on his objective and stayed the course until he reached the very summit, which represents the story of many Nigerians in the UK today.”

Ms Udenson added that Mr Akinfe will be available with a few copies of Black Ladder which he will autograph for interested readers on the night. She pointed out that as EMP & UCA Pop-up Restaurant grows, it will consider other similar initiatives to add to its monthly get-togethers.
