Empire executive producer Brett Mahoney has revealed that discussions are underway to possibly have embattled former cast member Jusssie Smollett return as Jarmal in time for the finale of the sixth season which is scheduled to run this spring.

Brett made this known while speaking with TVLine. Describing empire as a family show, the producer said the embattled actor was a significant part of the series, and it would be weird to end it without him.

“It would be weird in my mind to end this family show and this family drama of which he was such a significant part of without seeing him,” said Mahoney, before adding, “It’s fair to say it’s being discussed, but there’s no plan as of yet to bring him back. There’s been no decision made.”

Smollett’s case with the legal system back in February led to his removal from the series. The actor claimed he was beaten up by two men —  Obabinjo (Ola) and Abimbola (Abel) Osundairo, brothers originally from Nigeria — who hurled racist and homophobic slurs at him, and then was accused of fabricating the attack and charged with making a false police report.

He is known to play the role of Jarmal, Lucious’ musician son, since the TV drama debuted in 2015.
