#EndSARS: IGP Dissolves Rogue Police Unit Following Outcry From Nigerians

The Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, has announced the disbandment of the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad (F-SARS) of the Nigeria Police Force.

Adamu announced this in a live broadcast on Sunday afternoon, October 11, 2020.

At the briefing, the police chief said the disbandment of the squad was in response to the yearnings of the Nigerian people, adding that all officers of the defunct Special Anti-robbery Squad will be redeployed with immediate effect.

“The Federal Special Anti – Robbery Squad of the Nigeria Police Force otherwise known as SARS is hereby dissolved in all the 36 State Police Commands and the Federal Capital Territory.

“A new policing arrangement for tackling the offenses of armed robbery and other violent crimes to be unveiled to the public soon.

“A citizen and strategic stakeholder forum willing be launched to provide an avenue for citizens to regularly interface and advise the police authority on issues touching on the general public.

“To deal with reports of crimes committed against citizens, an investigative team will be constituted which will include civil society organizations and culprits will be punished.”

The briefing was immediately followed by a statement signed by Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Frank MBAs.

Also confirming the development, Bashir Ahmad, President Muhammadu Buhari’s Assistant on New Media said, “The SARS officially disbanded, all officers serving within the unit are to be redeployed with immediate effect, IGP Muhammed Adamu, announced in a live broadcast this afternoon. #EndSARS .”

This comes after Nigerians took to the streets for days to campaign for the disbandment of SARS, the police unit that was infamous for human rights abuse.
