A warning has been issued over frozen sweetcorn that may be contaminated with listeria in UK Lidle supermarket. Lidl’s Frozen Green Grocer’s Supersweet Corn, with best before dates until July 2020, are being recalled following a recent food poisoning alert.
Listeria is a bacteria that poses a particular threat to the elderly, pregnant women and babies.
The recall comes after the Food Standards Agency named 50 frozen products that have been taken off shelves over fears they may be contaminated with the bacteria.
Stores, including Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Waitrose and Aldi, have already cleared tens of thousands of packs from their freezer section and are urging people to return products to get a refund.
Contaminated sweetcorn has been linked to 47 cases of illness across Europe including nine deaths.
In the UK, there are believed to be 11 known cases, although the actual number is likely to be much higher.
Most people who contract the bacteria typically suffer a severe headache, stiff neck and stomach upset but these symptoms disappear after a few days.
However, vulnerable groups such as elderly people, pregnant women and babies could develop life-threatening complications, such as sepsis.
Watchdogs have said listeria can be killed off through cooking but as some people eat sweetcorn raw in salads, it could pose a risk.
The contamination has been traced to a frozen food plant in Hungary which has been known to have problems with listeria contamination since 2016.
Yet despite this, it was allowed to continue supplying to shops.
The link was only discovered by Public Health England in March when experts launched a detailed investigation.
A PHE spokesman said: ‘In the UK, there have been two deaths due to listeria linked to this outbreak. Both were in 2017 and in both cases, the individuals had underlying conditions.’
