We say Happy Independence day to all Ugandans in the UK and around the world. In Celebration this great day, check out these 10 interesting facts that you may not know about the country.

  1. Uganda’s official motto is “For God and my County.”
  2. The most popular languages in Uganda are: English (Official), Swahili (Official), Luganda and various Bantu and Nilotic Languages
  3. Uganda’s main exports are tourism, coffee, fish, tea, tobacco, cotton, corn, beans, Sesame and related fish products
  4. Uganda is home of the tallest Mountain Range in Africa – The Rwenzori Mountains also referred to as the Mountains of the Moon.
  5. Uganda has more Chimpanzees than any other East African County (5000)
  6. Caesarian sections were being performed in Uganda way before 1879 when R.W. Felkin observed his first successful operation by indigenous healers in Kahura. (reference: Notes on Labour in Central Africa” published in the Edinburgh Medical Journal, volume 20, April 1884, pages 922-930.)
  7. Uganda is known as Africa’s premier birding destination. There are over 1000 bird species recorded in Uganda
  8. Uganda is the second youngest country in the world with about 70% of the population below the age of 25.
  9. Sir Winston Churchill called Uganda “the Pearl of Africa”. He visited the country when it was under the British rule.
  10. Uganda welcomes over 800,000 tourists each year.
