Jacob Zuma resigns As the President of South Africa!

South African president, Jacob Zuma who has been in power since 2009, resigns after pressure from his own party and the people of South Africa. His resignations was televised and this was where he revealed that he was stepping down with immediate effect even though he disagreed with his party (African National Congress) ANC’s decisions.

Mr Zuma, 75, has been facing calls to give way to Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa, the ANC’s new leader, they urged him to step down or face a vote of no confidence in parliament. He faces numerous allegation of corruption.

He said “No life should be lost in my name and also the ANC should never be divided in my name. I have therefore come to the decision to resign as president of the republic with immediate effect,” he said.

“Even though I disagree with the decision of the leadership of my organisation, I have always been a disciplined member of the (African National Congress) ANC.

“As I leave I will continue to serve the people of South Africa as well as the ANC, the organisation I have served… all of my life.”

The resignation of president Jacob Zuma marks the end of an era. An era of divisions, infighting and public squabbles amongst other things. The people of South Africa are celebrating today and looking forward to a new era and beginning.

ANC’s deputy president, Mr Ramaphosa is the parties favourite to win the 2019 election, one which Mr Zuma was barred from competing in, having served two terms and is more likely to step into power after Zuma’s resignation.
