Kitenge Festival UK 2017

A colourful display of African Fashion and culture is set to descend on the capital when Kitenge Festival UK makes its 5th annual return. This is the largest African themed festival celebrating African fashion, culture, businesses & the Arts in the UK.

The one-day event is a unique platform which showcases Africa’s valuable, distinctive and unique heritage in a carnival/celebration atmosphere whilst instilling a sense of African pride. The teams’ goal is to bring together small businesses of African nature. This year organisers Jozyz Events & PR Agency have partnered with Open the Gate, the organisation behind London’s renowned African Market and African on the Square to oversee the market stalls, popups and expo. The event will feature live performances, dance, competitions, awards program, networking, product sampling, African food stalls, fashion stalls, business expo, drum, fashion shows and traditional craft displays.

The Festival’s Founder Jo Nganda, from Uganda, said she is excited to shine a light on her heritage and culture when she brings the celebrations on 12th August, 11- 6PM at the Newham Leisure Centre, 281 Prince Regent Ln, London E13 8SD.

“We are bringing together people from across Africa to get together under one roof and celebrate Africa. She added, ” Kitenge Festival UK is designed to appeal to people who take an active role in setting the mould for cultural trends and the overall ingenuity within the African Community in the UK. I have seen the growth of African culture especially African fashion and African-owned businesses so this festival is all about owning that heritage with pride and showcasing the Africa I know and love to the rest of the world”.

Proceeds from the event go towards Hope Alive Mission which supports Jo’s work with youth and domestic violence charities in the UK and Africa. “I wanted to use this as a vehicle to give something back to the communities that embrace and harness community cohesion.”

London resident Miss Nganda said it was important for the festival to give young African talent particularly fashion designers and musicians a ‘platform’ to launch their talents to a wider audience. “It’s very rewarding to see someone unknown launch on this platform and then go on to big things in their careers. With all the challenges that come with organising an event of such magnitude, for the Kitenge Festival UK to receive international recognition has been worth it.

BEFFTA Awards Founder Dr Pauline Long and Cllr Adedamol Aminu are confirmed guests of Honour. The event will be hosted by the vibrant Lydia Olet (Kenya in the Park) and Ivan Kaburahe (TGM Radio).

Confirmed Headlining Act includes; Seby Ntege & live band(Uganda). Other confirmed acts include; Sabbey International Drummers and ArA Harmonic.

Models from Exquisite Model Management will strut their stuff on the runway, showcasing African designs from local and international designers who are hoping to make their mark in the British fashion industry.
