Former UN Secretary general, Koffi Annan, was laid to rest in his home country, Ghana, yesterday, September 13th. many world leaders and royalties gathered in Accra to say their final farewells. Annan died on 18 August in Switzerland at the age of 80.
Including the UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres.
The president of neighbouring Ivory Coast and the leaders of Liberia, Namibia, Ethiopia, Nigeria and Zimbabwe have also attened the historic state funeral of the exceptional world leader.
Ghana’s President Nana Akufo-Addo called the funeral “a major event for our country” and described Annan as “one of the most illustrious people of this generation”.
The former queen of the Netherlands, Princess Beatrix, and her daughter-in-law Princess Mabel, who were close friends of Annan, were among the mourners.
Amongst other speakers, the Anglican bishop of Annan’s home city of Kumasi in central Ghana, the Most Reverend Daniel Sarfo, said: “Today history is being made in Ghana. One of our illustrious sons is lying here.
“But we are grateful that God used him over the years to work for humanity, for peace. Today, as he lies here, he has finished his work.”
The unforeseen loss of the remarkable leader was acknowledged by millions around the world.
