Meet Sam Okyere from Ghana, he is the most famous black man in Korea today. Okyere age 25, from 2009 worked to bridge the gap between Korea and Africa and change local misconceptions.

After applying and being accepted to a Korean Government Scholarship Program in 2009, he moved to Korea for his studies but little did he know what he was up against.

Korea is one of the countries in the world where black people are not easily found. Sam said during his interview below with ASIAN BOSS.  ‘The locals believe in the Hollywood stereotype of ‘the black man’, a bad good for a nothing gangster’. But nothing stopped him from trying, from learning the language, spending time with locals to stepping into Korean TV shows was the least of things that land Sam to fame. He became the opposite of what Koreans think of a typical black man, he became very friendly, helpful, humble, loyal and paticipated in most events among other things.

Nothing stopped Okyere from trying to change that picture. He learning to speak Korea and getting into Korean TV shows was part of his rise to fame and popularity in the country. When out and about, Koreans stop to take a picture with him.

    Watch his story below.

This year, Sam Okyere also appeared of FORBES KOREA’S List of 30 under 30 most influential foreign entertainers in Korea showbiz.
