Meghan Markle talks about being called a black woman on the second episode of Archetypes podcast featuring Mariah Carey on Spotify.

Recall when Meghan and Harry’s relationship initially went public, the British headlines were guilty of having more than one pretty racist sensation. The Daily Mail’s top article, “straight outta Compton” carried stories that Meghan and her mother came from crime-riddled mob, was one appalling example.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry had told Oprah Winfrey that Harry’s own family worried about Archie’s future skin color prior to his birth.

Meghan Markle explains on the podcast with Mariah Carey called – ‘The Duality of Diva’, says she was only treated like a “black woman” for the first time when she began dating Prince Harry – and how things had not remained the same since she entered the royal life.

She discloses how the 53-year old American singer, Ms Carey whose father is African-American and Venezuelan, while her mother is white Irish has been a source of inspiration to her as a mixed woman since she was a child. She said when Carey first came on the music scene she thought:

‘Oh my gosh. Someone who looks like me. She’s mixed like me’, adding that she was a ‘fangirl’ of the star.

The Duchess, stated clearly that her estranged father Thomas is white and her mother, Doria is black, she added:

‘Because we’re light skinned, you are not treated as a black woman. You’re not treated as a white woman. You sort of fit in between. If there is any time where there was more focus on my race it was when I started dating my husband. Then I started to understand what it was like to be treated like a black woman because up until then I was treated as a mixed woman and things really shifted’.

Mariah Carey replied:

‘But that’s an interesting thing, a mixed woman, because I always thought it should be OK to say I’m mixed, like it should be OK to say that, but people want you to choose.’

This week’s episode is called: ‘The Duality of Diva’, where Meghan herself was branded a diva by the singer, Mariah Carey.
