The 21st New York African Film Festival (NYAFF), kicked off on May 7, and ends today May 13, with the theme “Revolution and Liberation in the Digital Age.”
The opening of the event took place at Film Society of Lincoln Center, in celebration of the centenary of Nigeria’s independence, kicking off with Nollywood dark comedy ‘Confusion Na Wa’ by Kenneth Gyang. And the over talked about African film of the year ‘Half of a Yellow Sun’, directed and adapted by Biyi Bandele and starring Thandie Newton, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Anika Noni Rose.
O.C Ukeje stars in both films, and was the man of the event. Meeting and shocking hands with Bill de Blasio (Mayor of New York).
O.C Ukeje is an elevating and aspiring Nollywood actor. Apart from starring in HOAYS, and Confusion Na Wa, he also stared in block buster films including Black November, Alan Poza, And also played the second lead in the screen adaptaiton of Bola Agbaje’s award winning play, ‘Gone Too Far‘. He has won some great awards including the 2013 Best Actor in a Drama Award at the inaugural Africa Magic Viewers Choie Awards (AMMA)

‘Confusion Na Wa’ is a 2013 Nigerian dark comedy drama film directed by Kenneth Gyang, starring Ramsey Nouah, OC Ukeje, Ali Nuhu and Tunde Aladese. The title of the film was inspired by the lyrics of the late Afrobeat singer, Fela Kuti’s song Confusion.
‘Half of a Yellow Sun’ boasts an incredible ensemble including Academy Award nominee Chiwetel Ejiofor, British actress Thandie Newton, Nollywood superstar Genevieve Nnaji as well as veteran singer/actress Onyeka Onwenu, Zack Orji, OC Ukeje, and Anika Noni Rose.
In its 21st Edition, New York African Film Festival is a month long celebration of the continent’s best of the best with staggering 40+ films slated in its lineup. They will be showing in three different cultural venues throughout the city. The festival presents a unique selection of contemporary and classic African films, running the gamut from features, shorts, and documentaries to animation and experimental films.
