The questions on the relevance of the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board, have recently tripled, since the release of the results of this year’s examination.

The general public and JAMB itself confirmed that this year’s result was one of the worst ever, if not the worst. To further annoy students, JAMB has decided to leave the success of its candidates in the hands of universities who are to choose cut-off marks themselves. There is no official cut-off statement.

This, according to some wailing candidates, will give the universities the chance to make more money this year.

“They go now put high score so that their bribe go increase.”

“Make they stop this JAMB since we will still take Aptitude Test.”

“That means if your Aptitude Test is poor, your JAMB no fit even help you.”

The lamentations kept coming from people on various media platforms, and it kept bringing the question “is JAMB still relevant?”

There were days JAMB had the final say in results and entrance into universities. The level of corruption regarding admissions were low during those periods. Now, candidates are concerned about how they’ll fare in the upcoming post-UTME exams which usually comes after JAMB’s UTME exams in recent times.

Of what use is JAMB when the university still conducts its own examination? Nobody regulates these universities. Money is made from forms being sold, and rumours keep increasing on how some scores are manipulated to give certain people the upper hand.

You can perform poorly in JAMB and still have the highest score at the university’s entrance examination, and this, in some cases, is attributed to instances of bribery and corruption.

When certain amounts are paid by the parents of the student, admission becomes guaranteed, even with a low JAMB score.

So, shouldn’t we scrap JAMB’s UTME and concentrate on the post-UTME?

Or, should we return complete power to JAMB and scrap the post-UTME?
