Australian feminist Germaine Greer has criticised Beyoncé over her on-stage outfits. The feminist made the comments in an as yet unreleased documentary called Germaine Bloody Greer.
In the documentary, which will be aired on BBC2 on Saturday, Greer says: “Someone like Beyoncé – who I think is a fantastic musician, a beautiful voice as true as a bell – why has she always got to be f****** naked and have her t**s hanging out? Why?”
The Sun reported that the 72-year-old, who has a history of making controversial comments, says: “I’m not saying you have to keep your clothes on but why is sexual display part of the job? I might as well ask that question to a barmaid who says she doesn’t get any tips if she doesn’t show cleavage.”
Greer also goes on to single out female athletes for their sporting attire.
“Why do women athletes have to be naked? I watched bloody figure skating and the woman is virtually naked. She has got a few wisps of cloth and the man is in evening dress. You think nakedness is usually a sign of submission, it’s a sign of inequality,” she says.
Greer, who posed nude for photos for Suck magazine in 1971, describes her nudity as “revolutionary” and a “disruptive gesture”.
The feminist and author recently made headlines after she spoke about rape at the Hay literary festival and said that the sentence for the crime should be reduced.
She said: “Instead of thinking of rape as a spectacularly violent crime, and some rapes are, think about it as non-consensual … that is bad sex. Sex where there is no communication, no tenderness, no mention of love.”
Beyoncé’s performance outfits have been a hot topic of late as the star’s On The Run II tour with her husband, rapper Jay-Z has started in Cardiff, Wales.
