African Fashion Week London

A beautiful day in London saw the launch of Africa Fashion Week London’s 5th year anniversary.  Held in Camden Town’s famous South African venue, Shaka Zulu, designers, press, models and other industry professionals mingled and took in the atmosphere and surroundings that totally lent itself to show off the best of African inspired fashion.

The ever charming, Ronke Ademiluyi, greeted her guests with fabulous designs and delicious cocktails and canapés; all potent enough to make sure her guests were in for a sensory afternoon of Inspirational African design.
Designers from as far afield as Taiwan represented at the launch.  Amy Ku of AIMEEKU flew in from Taipei City especially to highlight the fact that African print is becoming enormously popular in Asia.  We really look forward to seeing the rest of her collection on the AFWL 2015 catwalk.
Caroline Beyll representing her brand, Caroline Beyll, showed us elegance of design which incorporated 1950s flair that was both timeless and on trend and Thora Jewels accessorised perfectly.

London-based ethical t-shirt designer, Aso Global, brought their Iyoba inspired t-dresses which provided a touch of street fashion to the event; proving that African fashion blends perfectly with London’s ever-evolving fashion conscious collective.

Roooi, a veteran showcaser and staunch supporter of Africa Fashion Week London, represented his unique style by bring his high drama, high glamour designs to the launch. We can’t wait to see his latest collection on the Africa Fashion Week London 2015 catwalk.

Africa Fashion Week London’s hair and makeup sponsors brought their expertise in afro-beauty to the launch. Motions stylist, Sandra Webb, provided iconic hair designs using Motions innovating range of products. Fashion Fair cosmetics were represented by AFWL’s chief makeup artist for the second year running, Abbey May Hopkins. The Looks were bold, eye catching and saturated with colour.

This year will be the biggest yet.  Africa Fashion Week London’s founder, Ronke, has worked tirelessly for her brand and for the designers she unfailingly supports.   It is an astounding achievement that in five short years, AFWL is now Europe’s largest catwalk event providing relatively unknown designers a platform to showcase their African-inspired designs to an international audience.

Since 2011 AFWL has hosted 300 designers for an audience of 45,000 consumers, industry professionals and international media.   The greatest motivating factor is realizing the tremendous potential within the African fashion industry; which if properly harnessed, can create jobs; channel youth energy and talent into constructive use.
A record number of designers have applied to showcase on the catwalk at London Olympia in August.  We have country-sponsored exhibitors creating pavilions of style; hair and makeup demonstrations specialising in afro-beauty.  ‘New Faces’ African-heritage model competitions; seminars and textile printing demonstrations and, of course, two days of heart-stopping catwalk.
