Top news of the week, Women in Saudia Arabia have now been granted the right to drive. King Salman bin Abdulaziz ordered the change in a royal decree delivered on Tuesday, Sept 26th, requesting that drivers licenses be issued to women.

The order said it will be effective immediately but the rollout will take months.

A high-level committee of ministers has been set up to examine the arrangements for the enforcement of the order.

The committee will take up the recommendations within 30 days from the date of the decree, and will be implemented between 23 and 24 of June 2018, based on the Islamic calendar. The decree said that women would be allowed to drive “in accordance with the Islamic laws”.

In response to the announcement, Manal al-Sharif, who became the public face of the campaign to allow women drive, after she was imprisoned for driving, tweeted this:

“Today, the last country on earth to allow women to drive #Women2Drive#Daring2Drive we did it

💪🏼❤️☺️

Saudia Arabian is the only Islamic country which doesn’t allow its women to drive.
