According to a UK poll, 24 percent of 16-24-year-olds believe that marriage should be like a mobile phone contract that can be renewed or terminated after two years. This new ComRes poll for the Coalition for Marriage has revealed that traditional views of marriage are dying out among young people.

According to the poll 24 per cent of 18 to 24-year-olds think there should be temporary marriage contracts similar to the ones handed out by mobile phone providers.

A third of the age group also backed polygamy – being married to more than one person at once – while 30 per cent support “fluid arrangements” where people can easily move between different partners.

More disturbingly 13 per cent backed incest being brought into the legal definition of marriage.

The poll questioned 2,002 adults of all age groups and found that 55 per cent of parents said they would be pleased if their child married somebody of the opposite sex while 17 per cent would be happy if their child married somebody of the same sex and 10 per cent if their child lived with a partner unmarried.

The poll also found that 48 per cent of people back so called “no reason” divorces where somebody does not have to give a justification for ending their marriage.

The idea being lobbied for by many in the legal profession is aimed at making divorce easier and quicker but was opposed by 26 per cent of respondents in the poll.

However, 70 per cent of people polled said there should be a statutory cooling off period before a divorce is finalised to give couples a chance to change their minds.

But two-thirds agreed that it is better for parents whose marriage is in difficulty divorce than stay together and allow their children to witness their disagreements.
