Nigerian Afrobeat Singer Tems is officially a Grammy-winning artist. The music star who earned three Grammy nominations at the 2023 Grammy Awards has won one of the three, thereby becoming the first Nigerian female artist to win a Grammy award.

The songwriter was nominated alongside Future Drake for their single “Wait For U” in the Best Melodic Rap Performance and Best Rap Song categories. She won the Grammy for the best melodic rap performance.

For her third nomination, Tems was credited as a songwriter on Beyonce’s Renaissance. Beyonce winning the category would earn Tems an award for the category as a contributor to the album. If Beyonce wins, this would be the first time a Nigerian artist has won a major category at the Grammys.

In two years, the Grammy-winning star has received many accolades, including a recent Oscar nomination for Best Original Song with “Lift Me Up,” a soundtrack off Marvel’s “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” at the 2023 Academy Awards.

“Wait For U,” the single that earned her a Grammy win, also gave her her first No. 1 Billboard Hot 100 in April 2022, making her the first African female artist to top the chart. She also became the first African female musician to win the Best International Act at the BET Awards in 2022.

Tems has gone above and beyond her peers in the past year, and we are on the lookout for how she can keep up the momentum this year.
