For Black History Month, Spotify UK has launched a new category called ‘Black History Is Now’, a broadcast that will celebrate the black British experience. This was announced by Spotify UK Head of Shows and Editorial Austin Darbo.

The new section will host playlists and talks that champion black British music and culture. Launced this October, the category will also be available on the platform throughout the whole year and perhaps here to stay.

Austin Darbo, head of shows and editorial at Spotify UK, said the category will be “celebrating the black British experience”.

The category will house a collection of playlists which feature some of the very best contributors to Black British music and culture.

The playlists are as follows: Foundation UK, which explores the originators of UK MC culture, Galdem: Queens and Mandem: Kings, which respectively feature modern day artists flying the flag for black music, Black Britain: Soul Sisters and Notting Hill Carnival Anthems amongst others.

Then there’s ‘Black Britain: Soul Sisters’ which will host black British sisters who paved the way for today’s soul, pop and R&B stars, ‘Black Britain: Windrush Generation’ which focuses on sounds inspired and influenced by the Windrush generation, and ‘Notting Hill Carnival Anthems’ which will bring classic Notting Hill anthems from the 90’s through to 2018.

There’s also a host of podcasts and talks to dive into on the category, including Chuckie’s #Halfcast Podcast and ‘Who We Be TALKS_’ which looks at all aspects of UK street culture.

In a statement released at the time, Spotify said: “Even after Black History Month has passed, the celebration of Black History should not end.

“By paying tribute to the black musicians who have paved the way, Spotify will be empowering the artists who will define what’s next.”
