Supermodel, Naomi Campbell has been living it up in Lagos over the past few days and said that Conde Nast should launch Vogue Africa to help highlight the continent’s contribution to the industry.
Campbell, who was in Nigeria for Arise Fashion Week, cited the recent launch of Vogue Arabia as a precedent for the high-end magazine moving into new markets.
Speaking to news agency Reuters, she said: “There should be a Vogue Africa. We just had Vogue Arabia – it is the next progression. It has to be.
“Africa has never had the opportunity to be out there and their fabrics and their materials and their designs be accepted on the global platform … it shouldn’t be that way.”
“People have come to realise it is not about the colour of your skin to define if you can do the job or not.”
There are currently 27 versions of Vogue published by Condé Nast around the world, in countries including Thailand, Bulgaria and Turkey, with Vogue Arabia being their most recently launched edition.
Following Campbell’s comments, there have been mixed reactions to the possibility of an African Vogue. While others think it’s a brilliant idea which is long overdue others think it’s not needed.
Instead of launching a vogue Africa edition, why not support and amplify already existing publications that are African-centered and have been trying to fill the void, even when vogue saw no potential in us?

we don’t need a vogue africa, we need one of our own publications to be as esteeemed as a vogue africa

With so many digital and print magazines coming out of Africa, will local prints suffer if there should be a Vogue Africa or will the benefits overshadow everything else? We would like to hear your thoughts.
