Battle for the White House has seen Joe Biden of the Democratic party emerge victorious ahead of incumbent president Donald Trump of the Republican party.

Joseph Robinette Biden Jr. has been elected the 46th president of the United States, after defeating President Donald Trump in one of the most divisive elections in U.S. history.

The 77-year-old member of the Democratic Party who served as the 47th Vice President of the United States in the Barack Obama administration from 2009 to 2017 and as the United States Senator for Delaware from 1973 to 2009, amassed a total of 273 electoral votes ahead of Donald Trump’s 213 votes.

In a victory speech Saturday night in his hometown of Wilmington, Delaware, Biden said he was humbled by the trust America had placed in him and reached out to those Americans who did not vote for him.

“I understand the disappointment tonight. I’ve lost a couple of times myself. But now, let’s give each other a chance,” Biden said. “This is the time to heal in America.”

California Sen. Kamala Harris, his running mate, who will make history as the first woman, the first Black person and the first person of South Asian descent to become vice president, noted the significance of her place on the stage Saturday night.

The two newly elected leaders both took to their respectively official Twitter pages to celebrate their victory.
