Film Review

‘When Love Happens, a romantic and feel good comedy movie premiered on the 4th of September at the Odeon Greenwich Cinema, London. Stars of the movie Weruche Opia, OC Ukeje and many more dazzled on the red carpet, celebrating the renowned and spectacular movie which has obviously set standards for Nollywood romantic movies.

When Love Happens director Seyi Babatope tells a story Moduroti Bankole Smith, aka MO, a 28 years old events planner who studied abroad but returns to home country (Nigeria) to settle. She leaves with her parents. With such age classified as matured enough, the pressure and frustration of not finding the one becomes higher. Things didn’t get easier for her as she is reminded at every turn about how wonderful love is. Having been hired to plan her rude and spoilt child hood friends wedding, she goes on a relationship expedition to find her true love.

Weruche Opia (MO) is new to Nollywood, however she made a great debut and nailed her role brilliantly. She is everything you want in a modern African woman in this movie. Beautiful, intelligent, bossy, calm etc. She is a woman who knows what she want and fights to get it. Weruche single handed kept all eyes glued on the screen with her endless amazing act from the beginning to the end.

I personally enjoyed the high use of closeup shots style used by the director (Seyi Babatope) , it kept eyes glued to the characters, helping viewers to see their expression very closely. It also gave the shots a great dept that helped the settings gain its own natural beauty. The African costumes and setting gave the setting the African scenery of beauty that lacks in most African films. The love scenes were amazingly shot and effortlessly look so natural, thus making us viewers blush in a good way.

Other casts of the movie which includes; Beverly Naya, Oreka Godis, Gideon Okeke, Keppy Epeyoung Bassy and Shaffy Bello all played their role professionally.

When Love Happens, honestly has no bad review. I found it very difficult to point out any boring or bad scene. The only issue i will adress is the lack of sense of area and city to give us a wider sense of the environment, however, it occured to me that this might be the directors decesion and style.

Other popular faces spotted at the premiere includes, the movie director Seyi Babatope, gospel music star Sammie Okposo, broadcasters Adora OlehPriscilla Nwikpo, actor Lateef Lovejoy, Anthony Monjaro and Afrobeats starlet Vicky Sola. Executive directors Kene Mkparu and Kene Okwuosa alongside Moses Babatope, CEO of Talking Drum Entertainment (UK distributors of When Love Happens) were also in attendance at the event which was hosted by Dj Abass.

Finally, ‘When Love Happens‘ is a feel good comedy that will keep your eyes glued to the screen, thus making you laugh more than you anticipated. with a well though out cast and a spectacular production, is no doubt one of Nollywood romantic comedy with possible international appeal.
