The country of Zimbabwe today voted for the first time since ‘post-Mugabe’. Former President, Robert Mugabe age 94, was ousted in November 2017 after ruling for 37 tears, almost four decades in power.
The main contenders in the presidential vote are current President Emmerson Mnangagwa, 75, of the ruling Zanu-PF party, under which Mugabe ruled the country and opposition leader Nelson Chamisa.
Parliamentary and local elections are also taking place today, Monday, July 30th.
According to BBC Africa, polls give Mnangagwa a narrow lead over his rival who leads the MDC (Movement for Democratic Change) Alliance.
The country is expecting a high turnout of first-time voters as 5,635,706 people have re-registered to a new voters’ roll.
