Police have released an image of a newborn baby girl who looks black from her features. The police found her abandoned in east London park. They continue their appeal to trace her mother.

The baby, who is being looked after at a hospital, was discovered last night – which saw temperatures in the UK drop to their lowest in seven years – in Newham.

Officers were called to the scene around 10.15pm after a woman walking her dog with her children in a small children’s park on Roman Road found the newborn baby which she heard crying.

The baby had been wrapped in a white towel and placed in a shopping bag on the ground next to a park bench.

Police say she had not been hidden.

She has been unofficially named Roman, after the road which she was found on, by hospital staff who are caring for her.

Police are appealing for the baby’s mother to come forward so that she can receive medical attention and support. They are growing increasingly concerned that she may be in need of urgent care.

In a direct appeal to the child’s mother, inspector Shane Clarke of North East Command Unit, said: “We are growing increasingly concerned for your welfare and I urge you to make contact either with police, your local hospital or GP surgery. It is really important that we know that you are safe.

“I would also urge anyone who has information that could help us to reunite this baby with her mother to come forward.”

Anyone with information as to the whereabouts of the mother is asked to call police on 101 quoting reference CAD7825/31JAN or Tweet @MetCC.
