The annual white beast has finally arrived across the whole of the UK and as expected disrupted travelling, transportation and other activities mostly in London. Police forces have reported ‘tricky’ driving conditions, with forecasters expecting the wintry weather to continue well into rush hour.
There are already problems for people getting into and around London with things looking likely to get worse throughout the rest of the day.
London is currently under a yellow weather warning for snow and ice today and tomorrow, and on Friday and Saturday.
London Overground is partly suspended because of snow and ice affecting services between Richmond and Willesden Junction, Romford and Upminster, and Edmonton Green and Cheshunt.
TfL Rail initially said there would be no service until 7am. However, TfL later suspended all trains because of snow and ice.
Transport for London said that it London Underground is accepting tickets via reasonable routes.
The Met Office said Kent and parts of the South East had already seen approximately 1cm of snow overnight, while the North East, including Newcastle and Northumberland, had seen between 3cm-4cm.
The public have also been asked to look out for the homeless and report anyone sleeping rough in the freezing conditions to their local council.
From Thursday, forecasters predict that another weather system, Storm Emma, will bring blizzards, gales and sleet as it meets the chilly Beast from the East later this week.
The storm, named by the Portuguese Met Service, will move north through Europe and is due to hit the UK on Thursday and Friday, and will be ‘significantly disruptive’, bringing the risk of power cuts and transport delays.
