The Yorubas often say that death is a debt that everyone owes to nature. No matter how much traditional rulers are referred to as representatives of the gods, they are very much mortals and not exempted from paying this natural debt, including the Alaafin of Oyo, who took his last breath on April 22, 2022, at Afe Babalola University Teaching Hospital, Ado-Ekiti.
Amidst tears from his 13 wives, over 50 children, and the people who once loved, revered and respected him, the monarch, who was a devoted Muslim until his passing, was buried hours after according to Islamic rites. Contrary to news that the powerful king of Oyo Town was hale and hearty until his demise, Premium Times reported that he passed away following complications from the Prostrate Enlargement conditions that he had been managing for several years. According to Palace Sources, the late Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, the third from Alowodu ruling house, knew that the condition would end eventually. As he aged, his ability to fight the condition caused several urinary problems to be reduced the condition worsened. Just as the Oyo King predicted, his end finally came shortly after suffering from a domestic accident in the palace that inflicted an injury to his hand. The injury reportedly aggravated his condition, landing him at Afe Babalola’s Hospital, where he gave up the ghost.
This revelation about the monarch’s health has left many in shock, who believed he was very active in the other room until his death, owing to the numerous young wives and concubines he amassed in the few years that he became famous. However, some have linked it to the secret to his 52 years of historic reign in the Oyo Kingdom and 83 years on earth.
