Here Are 5 Simple Food Tips For Better Health

0

As part of Public Health England’s (PHE) Better Health campaign, which encourages adults to eat better, lose weight and get active, we speak to registered Dietitian and member of the British Dietetic Association (BDA) Shola Oladipo who shares her five simple food tips for better health.

1.Become portion aware

In our culture serving large food portions is often a sign of love and generosity. And whilst this act of care may satisfy and be pleasing to our stomachs – it does little for our long-term health.

Being portion aware is particularly important, as having larger portions than we need can cause us to overeat and become overweight or obese. To maintain a healthy body weight, we must control our portions.  This means only eating when we are hungry and ensuring our plates at mealtimes are balanced with the three main food groups – protein, carbohydrates, and vegetables.   Swapping your usual plate or bowl for one that’s smaller in size can reduce the helping of food and prevent overeating. Most people feel just as full having eaten from a smaller dish as from a large one.

Shola says – ‘I find the following guides helpful when working with people who are trying to lose weight’. See the pictures below for examples of portion control for weight loss, and for weight maintenance:

2.Drink lots of water

Water is essential for life; and since our bodies are about 60% water it is important for us to drink plenty of water every day. Water helps our bodies to function effectively – this includes our kidneys, our blood, our brain and even our bowels too.

As adults, it’s important to consume enough fluid – around 6-8 glasses/cups per day (this includes water found in food or drinks such as tea etc). Water is a great way to stay hydrated and is a great choice if you want to lose weight as it’s calorie free.

Drinking this amount can sound quite daunting, but it is definitely achievable once you get into the habit. Aim to drink water throughout the day – start with a drink of water in the morning, followed by one mid-morning, drink midday, mid-afternoon, and in the evening.

Some people manage their daily water intake by drinking from a refillable bottle – find what works for you. In case you are forgetful, try setting an alarm on your mobile phone to help to remind you to drink.

3. Understanding Carbs

There are three types of carbohydrates – sugar, starch and fibre.

1.Sugar: We need to eat less of this type of carbohydrate.

They are the added sugars found in fizzy drinks, chocolates, cakes and biscuits; as well as snacks like doughnuts, puff-puff and buns. Added sugars are in breakfast cereals and some flavoured yogurts. Sugars in honey, syrup, unsweetened fruit juices also fall in this category –we need to eat less of them.

2.Starch or ‘starchy carbs’ are an important part of a balanced diet. They provide us with energy, vitamins and minerals. In African and Caribbean diets, we tend to eat quite large

carbohydrate portions in the form of white rice, pasta, bread, cassava, noodles, yam and green bananas. Our rich food heritage means that some of our most popular traditional dishes are rich in carbohydrates. We can still enjoy these foods simply by reducing the carbohydrate portion. Eating too much starchy carbs, can mean we’re having too many calories – and having too many calories can cause weight gain and lead to obesity.

3.Fibre – this type of carbohydrate is found in plants. It includes our fruits, vegetables, beans and pulses – that is foods like lentils and kidney beans. Wholegrains also fall into this group too and therefore you can have starchy carbs which are also whole grain versions such as: brown rice, wholemeal bread or wholemeal noodles.

In summary, we can enjoy our carbohydrates as part of a healthy diet by eating smaller portions and eating the wholegrain versions which are high in fibre, which help us to feel full.

4.Only eat when you are hungry

Food plays an important role in our community. From birthdays, weddings, festivals or family ‘get togethers’ – much of our gatherings involve cooking or eating. As lovely as it sounds – having food around us all the time can make us prone to eating when we are not hungry. Wasting food can also be a taboo in our culture, and often we are guilty of overeating to avoid waste.

Eating when not hungry has a significant effect on our health and can lead to poor eating habits, and eventually overweight and obesity. The weight in this case tends to add up over time, you often don’t notice it, but it catches up with you.

A great tip is to have set mealtimes and avoid too much snacking where possible. If you do need a snack, first of all try drinking water, as often we confuse hunger and thirst. After drinking pause and decide whether you are truly hungry, if so, have a small piece of fruit. Aim to distinguish between eating because food is ‘there’, and real hunger.

5. Fruit and Vegetables

Fruit and vegetables contain vitamins, minerals and fibre – all of which are needed for good health. African and Caribbean diets include a variety of fruit and vegetables, many of these are available in markets and specialist ethnic stores. Aim for a variety of five portions per day of fruit and vegetables (this doesn’t include starchy carbohydrates). It is fine if you have fresh, frozen or tinned fruit or vegetables – it all counts towards your five a day. Vegetables are quite low in calories, so it is helpful to have plenty of these on your plate to fill you up – remember to steam or cook with very little oil.

Research shows that adequate intake of fruit and vegetables can help protect you from diseases such as heart disease and some cancers. They can also help you to avoid constipation.

Fruits are also great for desserts, or snacks. With a few exceptions, most fruit and vegetables keep well in the freezer – this is helpful if you do bulk shopping and need to store it for longer. Fruit can keep a bit longer if you store it in the refrigerator instead of a fruit bowl.

US President Donald Trump Tests Positive For Coronavirus With Wife

0

United States President Donald Trump and First Lady, Melanie Trump, have tested positive for coronavirus.

Trump announced that both he and his wife tested positive for COVID-19 and will quarantine at his residential home within the White House – where he is expected to carry out his official duty as president.

The president broke the news of their positive test via his official Twitter handle on Friday, October 2, 2020.

His physician, Sean P. Conley, wrote minutes later that Trump and his wife “are both well at this time, and they plan to remain at home within the White House during their convalescence.”

Mr. Trump was diagnosed hours after it became publicly known that Hope Hicks, one of his closest advisers, tested positive on Thursday morning.

The duo had traveled together on Air Force One and Marine One to the first presidential TV debate with Democratic challenger Joe Biden this week.

Trump announced that both he and his wife tested positive for COVID-19.

His diagnosis comes just over a month before the country’s presidential elections on 3 November where he faces Mr. Biden.

Testing positive for Covid-19 could be a watershed moment for the 74-year old Republican who has frequently played down the seriousness of the virus.

Mr. Trump has refused for months to wear a mask in public on all but a few occasions and repeatedly questioned their effectiveness while mocking Mr. Biden for wearing one.

His diagnosis comes just over a month before the country’s presidential elections.

The US remains the country worst hit by coronavirus, with more than 7 million confirmed cases and over 205,000 deaths at the time of this report.

We are shocked and in the kind of deep pain you only hear about, the kind of pain we’ve never felt before. We were never able to stop the bleeding and give our baby the fluids he needed, despite bags and bags of blood transfusions. It just wasn’t enough. . . We never decide on our babies’ names until the last possible moment after they’re born, just before we leave the hospital.  But we, for some reason, had started to call this little guy in my belly Jack.  So he will always be Jack to us.  Jack worked so hard to be a part of our little family, and he will be, forever. . . To our Jack – I’m so sorry that the first few moments of your life were met with so many complications, that we couldn’t give you the home you needed to survive.  We will always love you. . . Thank you to everyone who has been sending us positive energy, thoughts and prayers.  We feel all of your love and truly appreciate you. . . We are so grateful for the life we have, for our wonderful babies Luna and Miles, for all the amazing things we’ve been able to experience.  But everyday can’t be full of sunshine.  On this darkest of days, we will grieve, we will cry our eyes out. But we will hug and love each other harder and get through it.

International Education for African Students in a Post-Covid World

0

The education industry, like the majority of industries in the world, has been greatly impacted by the coronavirus pandemic. This period has been particularly difficult for international students including those from Africa, pursuing degrees at US institutions, whose immigration, visa status, and educational programs have been left in limbo. In July 2020, the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) announced its decision to deport students who were in the country for educational purposes but unable to attend in-person classes since most universities had switched to online learning.

After considerable backlash and criticism, the directive to strip international college students of their visas, and eventually get deported if they didn’t attend classes in person was rescinded.

A July 2020 New York Times report stated that the deportation of over one million international students could have cost universities millions of dollars in tuition, and jeopardized the ability of U.S companies to hire the highly skilled workers who often start their careers with American education.

“For many years obtaining a degree at an institution of higher learning in the United States has been the global “gold standard” for education. However, during the pandemic, the appeal of studying in the US has lessened for many African students due to issues related to racial and social unrest, immigration and visa status, and inability to travel due to closed borders. Webster University’s Ghana Campus has provided a well-received alternative for many students and their families who desire an undergraduate or graduate degree from an accredited US university at the convenience and comfort of being at home in West Africa,” says Christa Sanders Bobtoya, the Director of Webster University Ghana. Sanders-Bobtoya has travelled extensively across five continents, spanning 65 countries, dedicating her career to the field of higher education while managing study abroad programs as well as international branch campuses of US institutions in both Europe and Africa.

Webster University Ghana is the only international campus of Webster University on the African continent to offer US-accredited graduate and undergraduate degrees. The thriving liberal arts institution is accredited by the National Accreditation Board of Ghana and the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) in the United States (US). All Webster University students receive a degree issued from the US and, regardless of specific degree area, following the same curriculum worldwide. The home campus in St. Louis, Missouri, which issues the degrees, has an impressive track record of 105 years of providing high-quality American education.

“Webster University students are exposed to new ways of thinking and benefit from the cultural diversity and enriching academic environment that strengthens their critical-thinking skills. Since opening our doors in 2014, we have enrolled both undergraduate and graduate students from over 25 different countries, spanning four continents including many from Africa and its Diaspora who later join Webster’s elite network of over 157,000 alumni worldwide,” adds Sanders-Bobtoya.

Webster University Ghana offers a practical, hands-on approach to learning with small class sizes that don’t exceed 30 students per class. The campus boasts a growing number of undergraduate academic majors and on the graduate level, a Master’s of Business Administration, MA in Human Resource Management as well as an MA in International Relations.

The University also offers students the unique opportunity to study abroad during their course of study for either an 8/9 nine-week term, semester, or an entire academic year at any of Webster University’s international campuses that include Switzerland, Austria, The Netherlands, US, Thailand, China, Greece, the UK, and Uzbekistan.

“As we all are adjusting to a new normal especially in the field of education the pandemic has presented, it is imperative that students from the African Diaspora especially know that they have an alternative for obtaining a high-quality international education at Webster University Ghana.  Our unique university experience provides an opportunity to enhance global academic partnerships and provide an avenue for Africans/Diasporans to collaborate on research and exchanges right here on the continent while on their journey of becoming global citizens,” concludes Sanders-Bobtoya.

Webster University offers the flexibility of 5 enrollment intakes every year, allowing new students to begin their collegiate journey when it best suits them. Prospective students may apply at any time during the year and start in August, October, January, March, and May.

The Ghana Campus has a rotation of visiting faculty every few weeks to teach students in both the undergraduate and graduate programs and graduate classes are held in the evenings and weekends to allow working professionals to be able to continue to work while pursuing a higher degree.

Community Voices Get Behind Government Drive urging African & Caribbean Communities To download the new NHS COVID-19 App

0

People across England and Wales are being urged to download the NHS COVID-19 app to help control the spread of coronavirus and protect themselves and their loved ones as case numbers rise.

To show their support, trusted voices from the community such as Pastor Marjorie Esomowei, Dr Seun Bakare and CEO Alistair Soyode of BEN TV have come together in a new film with community influencers, to encourage the community to download the new NHS COVID-19 App, which is now available to download from the Google and Apple App stores. The app has launched this week and, after positive trials and rigorous testing, is an important new tool to work alongside traditional contact tracing to help reduce the spread of the virus.

In the film,

community voices outline the reasons why they’ve downloaded the app – whether it is to protect loved ones, to know what to do if you develop symptoms or to know if you live in a high-risk area. This support echoes a national drive which aims to raise awareness that downloading the app will help control the spread of the virus and protect themselves and their loved ones as case numbers rise.

It will be available to those aged 16 and over in multiple languages. It forms a central part of the NHS Test and Trace service in England and the NHS Wales Test, Trace, Protect programme – identifying contacts of those who have tested positive for coronavirus.

The UK’s major mobile network operators, including Vodafone, Three, EE and O2, Sky and Virgin, have also confirmed that all in-app activity will not come out of customers’ data allowance.

The contact tracing element of the app works by using low-energy Bluetooth to log the amount of time you spend near other app users, and the distance between you, so it can alert you if someone you have been close to later tests positive for COVID-19 – even if you don’t know each other.

The app will advise you to self-isolate if you have been in close contact with a confirmed case. It will also enable you to check symptoms, book a free test if needed and get your test results.

The app has been designed with user privacy in mind, so it tracks the virus not people, and uses the latest in data security technology to protect privacy. The system generates a random ID for an individual’s device, which can be exchanged between devices via Bluetooth (not GPS). These unique random IDs regenerate frequently to add an extra layer of security and preserve anonymity.

The app does not hold personal information such as your name, address or date of birth, and only requires the first half of your postcode to ensure local outbreaks can be managed. No personal data is shared with the government or the NHS.

Download the NHS COVID-19 App today, it’s the simplest way to help protect those we love. Available now in both the Google and Apple stores.
