H&M Under Fire ‘Again’ For Not Styling The Hair of Black Child Model Before Shoot

0

Multinational clothing-retail company Hennes & Mauritz (H&M)is receiving yet another backlash for not styling the hair of a black child model before a photoshoot and publishing the pictures with many people see as bad hair.

The multinational clothing-retail company recently released its new line of fall sweaters and sweatshirts, featuring a diverse lineup of models. One of their models was a black girl but unlike the other models, her hair was not styled.

A lot of black people are very upset about the images. The majority felt it was intentional and was aimed at the natural hair community. But some blamed the child’s parents for not styling their daughter’s hair or insisting the company styles her hair properly before the shoot.

The last time H&M came underfire was last year after the multimillion company featured a black child model promoting a hoodie with the inscription, “Coolest Monkey in the Jungle“. 9 hours later H&M took down all the pictures of the kids because of heavy backlash from people.

Harmonia Rosales Receives Huge Backlash For Painting God As A Black Woman

0

Harmonia Rosales, a Chicago-based Afro-Cuban painter is receiving backlash for her alteration of what has always been known as  ‘normal’. Michelangelo’s “The Creation of Adam” is one of the most famous works of art ever created, as we all know.

However, when this female Chicago-based painter decided to create her own version of “The Creation of Adam” in 2017. She received a lot of backlashes. The reason? She reimagined God and the First Man as a black woman.

The New York Post reported that her version depicts the deity not as a white-haired man, but as a black woman, reaching to touch another black woman.

However, even though her painting attracted thousands of likes on social media when she posted it, it also sparked a lot of controversies. Many critics described her work as “disgusting”, a “desecration of an artistic masterpiece” and a “cultural appropriation”.

Rosales said at the time that she wanted to take a significant painting, a painting that is widely recognized and consciously or subconsciously conditions us to see whiter male figures as powerful and authoritative and she wanted to flip the script and establish a counter-narrative.

She added that white figures are a staple in classic art featured in major museums, and they are the “masters” of masterpieces. According to her, it only makes sense to paint God as a black woman because all human life came out of Africa, the Garden of Eden and all.

Still, the idea of a black female God got many people angry, and some people even criticized her for basing her painting on Michelangelo’s work, rather than creating something new.

Below are some more of her beautiful paintings.

Plane Carrying Second Batch of Nigerian Evacuees Hit Lagos Airport

0

A plane carrying the second batch of Nigerians fleeing xenophobic attacks in South Africa has landed in Lagos. The 300 Nigerians are among the 600 who said yes to the call to return home following the spats of attack in which Nigerians and other foreigners were targeted in several South Africa cities.

They had been due to leave Johannesburg airport on Tuesday, but their departure was delayed until the South African government granted a permit for their airplane.

Returners Tell Stories of Their Ordeal

Many of the returnees told different stories of their distressing experience in South Africa. Their ordeals had a common theme of violence, trauma and large scale of loss between them.

Lucky Ekente told reporters in Lagos of how his club was set ablaze and everything he had looted by angry mobs, leaving him without a pea to return home with.

But he was also happy for returning safely to Nigeria and thanked the owners of Air Peace — the airline organizing the evacuations.

Why are African Foreigners Evacuating South Africa?

On 1 September 2019 riots and looting targeting shops and other small scale businesses owned by African foreigners broke out in Jeppestown and Johannesburg. Those who took part in the bloody unrest validated their actions by claiming that foreigners were making life difficult for the South African people by competing and taking the jobs meant for them.

The feud has since led to threats of reprisal attacks on South Africans living in affected countries. There have also been a series of diplomatic and dignitary alternations between government and celebrity figures.

South Africa’s Babes Wodumo’s Zimbabwe Show Cancelled Over Tweets in support of Xenophobia

South African singer, Babes Wodumo who was booked to headline the Mapopoma Festival at the Victoria Falls Sports Club in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, from 29-31 December 2019, has been dropped by organizers of the event over her tweets which supported xenophobia.

The singer had a heated exchange with Ice Prince over her tweets shared when the xenophobic attacks led to a showdown between Nigerians and South Africans. She accused Nigerians of bringing in drugs into South Africa, an act she claimed led to the xenophobic attacks. Babes Wodumo also alleged that Zimbabweans were stealing RDP houses meant for South Africans.

However after the xenophobic storm was quelled, she claimed her Twitter account was hacked.

The festival’s founder and operations director, Patrick Mhofu Musonza, has confirmed that the singer won’t be performing at the event. He said concertgoers were not convinced by Babes’ claims of being hacked and warned her not to set foot in Zimbabwe.

“We wanted Babes to perform but after that tweet, the people who are going to the festival are after her head. Once she arrives in Zimbabwe, her safety is our concern. So it is mainly because of her safety and security concerns (that we have cancelled her performance).
“These are all red flags for us. She is claiming to be hacked but people are not buying that. We do not know whether she was hacked or not but if she is claiming she is hacked, we have to believe her.

Musonza also said the singer’s management sent over screenshots of messages from the hackers who apologized. He, however, said they doubt the messages were from hackers as no one hacks an account and also apologizes.

“They have sent us screenshots of the hackers apparently apologising but who hacks and then apologises?” he added.
