Polygamy has been seen as an option by men who at the beginning of relationships, have told themselves the inevitable truth – they cannot live with one wife.
Yul Edochie, a Nollywood Actor and son of the veteran actor Pete Edochie, took the internet by storm when he announced the existence of his new son from another woman. This was what he said:
“It’s time for the world to meet my son. His name is STAR DIKEH MUNACHIMSO YUL-EDOCHIE. Born by my second wife @judyaustin1. And I love him so much, just as much as I love my other children.”
His wife May Yul-Edochie, replied, “May God judge you both.”
This has sparked lots of speculations and assertions, with certain men stating that Polygamy is not a crime, which in other words, is seen as supporting statements to the actor’s action.
Some kept shouting that it’s better to get married to multiple women, thereby reducing adultery on the side of the man.
However, it is important to know that some of us do not care if Yul Edochie is a polygamist. If he decides to marry fifty wives, I don’t think it’s anybody’s business. Polygamy is an acceptable system of marriage in most places.
However, what is worrisome, is getting married in the monogamy system, only to end up declaring yourself a polygamist afterward. This is the crime Yul committed. A woman gave you seventeen years of peaceful matrimony – a union that was blessed with four children. – and you ended up cheating on her with another woman who bore you a son.
This was meant to be a secret until the blogger Gistlover, somewhat indicated that he was hiding something from the public. The actor had to pull a stunt by posting a picture of his son, followed by the post he made.
You could see anger and feeling of betrayal in his wife’s response. It was done without her knowledge, so one can’t say he’s a polygamist. He was a cheat who after being caught, decided to marry the lady he cheated with, in order to appear responsible. If he had initially told her that he was likely to wed a second wife sometime in the future, it would have been a different situation.
Several stars get married, and divorce afterward, when they find out that one person is going against what was agreed upon in the union. In Hollywood, some go as far as being in what they call an “Open Marriage,” in which both partners agree that despite their matrimony, they can have sex with others.
Open Marriage will soon become a normal type of marriage, as some people are already embracing it in America.
This type of marriage is another substitute for Polygamy, and both parties get to sign to it.
So, it is annoying seeing people defending Yul, when there are options available. If he had intentionally chosen Polygamy or Open Marriage, I doubt if the wife would have felt that way.
Yes, Yul had come out to make a post stating that a played a prank on people in order to trend. However, this has gone to showcase the intentions of certain men in the society, as some kept hiding under a deceitful quote which exposes their harmful intentions:
“Man is polygamous in nature.”
If you want to be polygamous, make it official, and don’t lure a lady who wants monogamy into your home.
