Popular American singer Madonna has had a controversial post on Instagram taken down on the basis that it supports several coronavirus conspiracy theories dimmed dangerous by government authorities and health experts.
Madonna’s post, a video promoting a potentially dangerous drug, was stripped from her Instagram account, after it was flagged by Instagram for sharing false information.
The video featured a controversial US doctor identified as Stella Immanuel and members of a group called America’s Frontline Doctors claiming malaria medication hydroxychloroquine cures the disease and face masks are unnecessary.
The full 45-minute long video and extracts from it have been pulled from social media sites Facebook, Twitter and Instagram after it began circulating online.
In her Instagram post, Madonna described Dr Immanuel as her “hero.” She wrote alongside the clip: “The Truth will set us all Free. But some people don’t want to hear the truth.” The 61-year old pop legend, who tested positive for Covid-19 back in May, also claimed that a vaccine for the deadly virus ‘has been available for months’
She added: ‘They would rather let fear control them and let the rich get richer and the poor and sick get sicker.’
On sharing the clip, Instagram included a ‘false information warning,’ before the video could be viewed on her channel, adding it was ‘reviewed by independent fact-checkers.’ A ‘see why’ button also presented a list of falsehoods contained in it.
The World Health Organization has said ‘there is currently no proof’ that hydroxychloroquine is a treatment for a preventative measure against the novel coronavirus. The organization also warns that ‘the misuse of hydroxychloroquine can cause serious side effects and illness and even lead to death.’
Dr. Immanuel is known to have made a number of outlandish claims through her YouTube channel in the past, including alien DNA, demon sperms, spirit husbands, and that the condition endometriosis is caused by sex demons.
