The Nigeria Police Force has announced the creation of the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) unit to replace the recently-dissolved Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).

The new unit was announced on Tuesday, October 13, 2020, as heightened demonstrations continue across the country and on social media against the brutality of the police.

The Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, said in a statement signed by Force spokesperson, Frank Mba, that SWAT will fill the gaps left by SARS whose main role was tackling violent crimes especially armed robbery and kidnapping.

The prospective members of the new team will undergo tactical training next week,  as well as psychological and medical examination to ascertain their fitness and eligibility for the new assignment.

The Inspector-General of Police also ordered all defunct SARS personnel to report at the Force Headquarters for Debriefing, Psychological and Medical Examination.
