Sometime in October this year, I stated that Nigerian Afropop Star – Wizkid – would win the Grammy this year. Having observed his role in a year bedecked with several concerts which were bred by his chart-topping single “Essence,” it’s only fair to see his name in the list of nominees.
Recently, the Grammys nominated him in the World/Global Music category, making my earlier assertions right, and this is the first step.
Have you seen the review of his recent 02 Arena concert? They are mind-blowing!
But will Wizkid win this Grammy? Inasmuch as I believe he will, there are some things to consider as obstacles. Rocky Dawumi, Femi Kuti, Angelique Kidjo, and Burna Boy are fierce contenders – one would not have expected this lineup of strong contenders this year.
Rocky Dawumi had a wonderful outing this year. The Ghanian performer has been awesome in flying his country’s flag globally.
Femi Kuti has always been good and has lost out of the nomination three times. This would be the fourth time he’ll be seen as a nominee in this category. Having an awesome year of international performances, will the Grammy Academy compensate him this year?
This year wasn’t that exceptional with Burna, but being the winner of the last edition, it’s also possible they could consider him Grammy worthy.
Angelique Kidjo has won it three times, and there’s also fear that ‘Grammy-worthiness’ could play a part in her winning the award.
But Wizkid’s outing this year outmatched that of every other performer, having reached the Billboard Top 10.
It is only fair, that he takes the award home.
