Oprah Winfrey the first African American self-made female billionaire will be presented with an exhibit in Washington DC in honour of her outstanding contribution to the world of media.

The exhibition, set to launch on June 9 at the National Museum of African American History and Culture is titled Watching Oprah: The Oprah Winfrey Show and American Culture. It will feature interviews segments, video clips, personal photographs and journals that explore the magnitude of Winfrey’s influence and her impact on America.

Travelling through all aspects of her life, the first portion of the show will focus on Winfrey’s childhood and the early stages of her career. It then moves on to the 25-year-run of her award-winning talk show, The Oprah Winfrey Show and in its final section, portrays her current role as a social influencer and her contributions to film, publishing and philanthropy.

Winfrey is already well recognised for her association with the museum for her donation of $21 million made back in 2013. In return, its theatre was named after.

At the time of making the generous offering, Winfrey said:

“I am so proud of African-American history and its contributions to our nation as a whole. I am deeply appreciative of those who paved the path for me and all who follow in their footsteps.

“By investing in this museum, I want to help ensure that we both honour and preserve our culture and history so that the stories of who we are will live on for generations to come.”

The exhibit, which showcases Winfrey’s humble beginnings and remarkable achievements, provides “a context for understanding not only who she is, but how she became a global figure, and how she is connected to broader stories and themes,” said Kathleen Kendrick, who has worked with Winfrey in putting the exhibition together.
