    Mental illness is a topic that continues to divide public opinion among regular Nigerians even in today’s modern society. And public stigma plays a huge role in deciding whose side one may choose to belong.

    But the notion that mental illness is rarely being discussed in the open in Nigeria is eroding increasingly. In this report by BBC Pidgin, Nnamdi, a Nigerian woman, narrates her experience with schizophrenia with the hope that it’ll enable others out there.

    Like every other person with schizophrenia, her symptoms began early on in junior secondary school, transforming into hallucinations and delusions. But now she’s grateful for her healing process and the support shown to her by friends and family.

    Schizophrenia is a disorder that affects a person’s ability to think, feel and behave clearly. There are more than 100 thousand cases per year in Nigeria.
