One of the top five personalities on picture-sharing app Instagram has wished that the platform never existed.

Popular American singer Selena Gomez has acknowledged that social media platform like Instagram is causing a negative change on the identity of young people.

Despite being among the top five most followed individuals with 167 million followers, Selena said that winding up with too many fans on Instagram is not as fun as people make it out to be.

The pop star recently sat with Dazed Magazine in an interview where she talked about the intention behind the name of her latest album ‘Rare’, the impact Instagram was having on millennials and the hiatus she took from social media back in 2018.

According to the 27-year old, Instagram is a massive platform that is destroying millennials and she would shut it down if it were within her powers.

“I think I’d have a lot of people not liking me for saying yes (switching Instagram off). If I could find a balanced, happy medium that would be great, but I would be lying if I said that it is not destroying some of my generation, their identity,” she explained.

Speaking further, she admitted that returning to social media two years after her hiatus was scary and she does not spend too much time on it.

“It was scary going back on, the first four days I was like, ‘No, there’s no way I can do this.’ What I do now is to only go on it when I feel like I need to, and then I’ll just log off, I will not take time to explore or look at anything else. I do not read anything, I do not read any single thing,” Selena added.

Concerning her album, Selena disclosed that the name “Rare” was aimed at  projecting a different view of the world into the minds of people.

“It’s a huge part of why I named my album Rare – because there’s so much pressure to look the same as everyone else,” she concluded.
