Black Panther has officially surpassed Titanic on the all time list of highest grossing films in north America. The Marvel superhero movie that stars Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan and Lupita Nyong’o among others has become the third highest grossing film in US cinema history.

It has shot past the action packed romance film Titanic, which remained at the top of its league for decades since its release back in 1997. The James Cameron directed flick bagged $600.8 million throughout its debut stretch, adding $57.9 million for its 3D re-release in 2012 and a further $691,642 last year for its 20th-anniversary edition.

Since its release, Black Panther is reported to have made $665 million domestically, overtaking Titanic and just behind Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Avatar. The movie has also made $1.3 billion globally.

Fans took to social media to share their excitement for the Ryan Coogler-directed movie taking the no.3 spot from Titanic.

One user said: “What an amazing achievement. Movie execs can no longer hide behind cash/popularity excuses when it comes to representation in film.”

Another commentator tweeted: Congradulations to #BlackPanther for overtaking #Titanic at the domestic box office. While Titanic is one of my all time favorite films, Black Panther was an amazing film with a fantastic cast, amazing world building, and just a great fun time!”

Black Panther will be the first movie to be screened in Saudi Arabia after its 35-year cinema ban, proving that the hit flick continues to break records – and barriers – across the world.
