Just last week, news broke about Disney acquiring a pitch for a new movie on Princess Sadé, a live-action fairytale film about an African Princess. In 2014, Trans Tales Entertainment a small Nigerian animation company made its first movie also by the name ‘Princess Sadé The Secret Princess based on the book Princess Sade: Pathway to Love.

Sadé The Secret Princes is a love story about a girl named Sade who overcome all odds to get accepted as the rightful princess of the land. Apart from the animated movie, There is also a book based on the Secret Princess.

The new movie by Disney according to deadline.com is an original idea by Ola Shokunbi and Lindsey Reed Palmer. But to us, it feels like a sequel to ‘Sadé The Secret Princess’.

Shokunbi and Palmer are set to co-write the screenplay which will centre on a young African girl named Sadé who, when her kingdom is threatened by a mysterious evil force, accepts her newly discovered magical warrior powers to protect herself and her people. With the help of the kingdom’s prince, Sadé embarks on an adventure that will allow her to embrace what makes her special and save the kingdom.

The Sadé movie will be first-time that an original Disney princess fairytale is led by a female African character.

Disney saw and we guess are inspired by the massive success earlier with the Marvel release of Black Panther, set in the fictional African nation of Wakanda with worldwide box office grosses hitting $1.35 billion (£1.03 billion). It’s the third-highest domestic performer of all time at $700 million (£534 million).

This is a great news for Africans in general, apart from the Princess and the Frog, another animation is being made which reflects the African ideology, lifestyle and culture.

Despite the coincidence, of being set in Africa and called Princess Sadé just like the original animated movie created by Nigerian writer and filmmaker Segun Williams with the same name, we’re all excited and can’t wait to see our very own Disney animation.
